Pride in the work
Student work created as part of the Opera Project has been displayed in a variety of public settings. For example, the masks created the first year were hung at the Hawaii Alliance for Arts Education awards presentation; samurai banners and illuminated letters were displayed at all four performances of Madam Butterfly in the NBC Concert Hall. Students were asked to present the opera project at the Honolulu District Principals Project-Based Learning Workshop, at the Honolulu District School to Work Conference, and at the Hawaii Association for Language Teachers Conference. Despite these honors, students are generally so proud of their final products that they are eager to take them home to be displayed in their bedrooms and at their parents' workplaces. If teachers are fortunate enough to convince some students to leave their work on display in the classroom, the students often check on the work to ensure it is kept dusted and in mint condition. Many students return the following year to ask about the current year's project and operas, demonstrating that the project has instilled a passion for learning.
