The Opera Project gave students the chance to
see back stage at the NBC Concert Hall,
including the wig and make-up room.
Since 1991, Roosevelt High School in Honolulu, Hawaii has participated in the
Hawaii Opera Theatre's Opera for Everyone program. The project uses opera as
the context for exploring a wide variety of social, historical, cultural, and
artistic themes. The project includes students attending an opera (each year
students and teachers completely fill the 2000-seat NBC Concert Hall for the
final dress rehearsal of three productions). As more Roosevelt teachers in world
languages, language arts, and social studies have participated in the program,
Roosevelt High School has become Hawaii Opera Theatre's pilot school for integrating
opera into the curriculum. While this project involves Roosevelt students in
grades 9 through 12, it is appropriate for students of all ages.
