Assessment included teachers and professional volunteers working with students on their projects and providing continual feedback. The teachers used checklists and rubrics for some projects completed in class.

The project itself provided a way to gauge students' progress in language acquisition and their conceptual development. Before this project, most language assessment was accomplished through paper-based testing. Through the year, individual student development was much easier to gauge because students had to engage in conversation on a daily basis.

High school age students receive elective credits for all courses taken at the BOC. Components of the project mapped to Washington State Essential Academic Learning Requirements in ESL/Reading, Social Studies, Science, and Art.
