A creative take on the fact the bridge models
are built from pasta.
Guest Speakers/ Consultants
The involvement of members of the community was an essential component of the
Bridge Project. Some of the key guest speaker/consultants included: Mary Jo
Dwyer, a local civil engineer, who spoke to the class on topics relating to
bridge building. She discussed the role of the civil engineer in the bridge
building process as well as engineering careers in general. Students brought
their scaled drawings for their bridge models to Ms. Dwyer and met for a consultation.
This gave students an opportunity to work collaboratively with an engineer on
their designs. Mark Adams, the chief engineer of the Department of Transportation,
discussed the status of the Louisville Bridge Project and the call for proposals.
He also discussed the highway issues near bridges that needed to be resolved
before a new bridge could be built. Mr. Adams served as the liaison when the
class attended public information sessions for the Louisville Bridge Project.
John Clements, project manager for the Louisville Bridge Project, served as
a mentor for two students who were interested in pursuing a career in civil
engineering. These students worked collaboratively with the Louisville Bridge
Project team to collect data for the environmental impact study required prior
to the actual building of the bridge.
